Trans people aren’t new, but the past few decades have seen an explosion of writing—scholarly, journalistic, medical, and commercial—about trans people and communities. In this workshop, Davey Shlasko reviews key concepts and terminology for communicating about trans identities, explores common problems in writing about trans issues, and introduces trans-inclusive practices for professional relationships. Attendees will learn

  • How to identify outdated, inaccurate, or offensive terminology regarding trans identities.
  • How to recognize writing about trans people and communities that is trite, stereotyped, or just boring.
  • How to work effectively with trans authors, regardless of topic, without letting confusion over gender get in the way.
