Description

"For editors, 'do no harm' goes beyond introducing errors. Learn how our biases might inadvertently lead to harmful edits." —Crystal Shelley, instructor

We all have implicit biases, and these can sometimes be reflected in our edits. One way our biases can inadvertently show themselves is through microaggressions, which can hurt the copy, erode the author’s trust, or reverse progress made with style recommendations and social justice movements.

This webinar will help editors understand how our individual identities shape our experiences and biases, know what microaggressions are and what they look like in editing, understand how microaggressions can affect the copy and the author-editor relationship, and have strategies for how to avoid this type of harm in editing. All editors can benefit from the information presented, regardless of what type of editing you do or who your clients are.

Crystal Shelley is the owner of Rabbit with a Red Pen, where she provides editing and authenticity reading services to fiction authors. Drawing on her background as a social worker, she unites her love of language and her passion for social justice by advocating conscious language use and inclusive representation in her editorial work. She is the creator of the Conscious Language Toolkits for Editors and Writers and serves on the board of ACES: The Society for Editing.
