Editing memoir is more than just editing someone’s life story. Often it’s about finding the story within a story—the part that will resonate most with the readers the memoirist is hoping to reach. Sometimes it’s about challenging the author to dig deeper or to broaden their approach. And in all cases, it means working with material so deeply personal that it can feel like you’re editing the writer themselves.
In this highly interactive class, we’ll work through a variety of memoir problems and solutions; tackle client relations and setting healthy boundaries for both parties; and discuss how to guide writers to uncover the story within their life.
This course is open to students at all levels.
