Susie Armitage
I’m a freelance journalist, writer, editor and audio/podcast producer based in New York. I’ve taught journalism at Hunter College and Lehman College in the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Previously I was an editor at Youth Communication, where I helped produce two magazines of true stories written by New York City teens and youth in foster care. Before that, I was the Global Managing Editor at BuzzFeed. I’ve worked and traveled across the former Soviet Union, teaching English in Ukraine, running a theater camp in Tajikistan and reporting by bicycle from Moscow for NPR. I have a master’s degree in international reporting from the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.
Outside of journalism, I do many kinds of writing and editing, including grant writing and communications for nonprofits (reports, success stories, brochure copy, copyediting, etc.) As a trained educator I also specialize in working with newer writers, students, and non-native speakers of English.
My services are varied: I can turn around a quick copyedit of a dense technical report; help you present program data and results in compelling, accessible language; write a grant proposal for your nonprofit; or give you thoughtful, constructive feedback on a personal essay, reported story or op-ed you hope to place for publication. As a freelancer, I specialize in identifying the right market for your writing and can help you refine pitches to editors.
