Katherine Suzette Ellis

KS Editing

I work with Indie authors as well as authors on the traditional publishing route to take all manuscripts from a draft to a book that people everywhere want to binge. If a reader can’t put the book down until the last page, then they still crave more, I’ve done my job well! If you’re looking for a professional, bookish bestie, then I’m your editor.

ABOUT ME

When I’m not reading for entertainment (an average of about book a day), or reading for editorial purposes, I am usually organizing or cleaning something else! I will even organize other’s closets for fun. In other words, I’m a total weirdo, I get it.

Don’t worry, I also love attending performances, finding great coffee shops and finding unique, hole-in-the-wall, authentic foods from around the world. Thank goodness my home base is in one of the most diverse cities in the United States – Houston, Texas. We do not, contrary to popular misconception, wear cowboy hats or say “howdy” any more often than elsewhere else in the states. However, I do live on a ranch and help to care for 6 horses, 8 cats, and 2 snakes. I’m originally from Boulder, Colorado and while I do miss the mountains and wineries, the cultural opportunities down here are stellar.

EDITING STYLE

My zone of genius lies in organizing plot, developing story elements, character development, creating flow, and enhancing an author’s personal style. I focus on the intention and voice of a piece as well as clarity, grammar and style, consistency, and cohesiveness. My authors receive feedback from the “reader’s perspective” in addition to my suggested edits to help keep them on target for their audience.

EXPERIENCE + QUALIFICATIONS

I have been writing and editing creatively and academically for eight years informally and have consistently produced effective and well-polished pieces. However, two years ago I decided to become professional. I began my foray into freelancing and now I get to work from home editing manuscripts every day. I have thoroughly fallen in love with the journey and have genuinely enjoyed every book and author I have had the pleasure to work with thus far.

My educational background is in the fields of political science, international affairs, and second languages, so technical communication is second nature even as much as the creative is my passion!

I am constantly increasing my formal qualifications by attending every online webinar and course possible – I’m an education junkie! Some of these courses and certifications include:

  • EFA copyediting series
  • EFA developmental editing series
  • EFA editing for YA series
  • EFA webinars for editing romance for YA, NA, and Adult audiences
  • EFA CMOS webinars
  • EFA webinars for sensitivity reading for DEI – diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • EFA webinars on various subjects which continue to diversify and increase in number
