Samantha Gussow
After graduating from college and realizing I had a knack for finding errors and inconsistencies (in menus, newspapers, novels, you name it), proofreading/editing was a natural fit. My editing career started in 2010 and my passion for editorial work has only grown since then. I started out as a proofreader at an educational nonprofit that developed math and reading curriculum. Some of the materials I edited were:
- Teacher’s manuals
- Student workbooks
- Student assessments (test questions and test passages)
- PowerPoints
- Conference program booklets
- Website content
After four years at the nonprofit, I transitioned into an editor role at T. Rowe Price, a large investment firm. In that role, I edited materials ranging from postcards to fund reports.
Currently, I work as a full-time editor at a company that handles denials management. In this role, I edit appeal letters which are sent to insurance companies to appeal underpaid claims for hospitals across the U.S. Reading clinical appeal letters has helped me expand my editing skills as I have learned a plethora of clinical jargon and am able to revise letters using layman’s terms when necessary. Having a productivity goal for editing allowed me to hone the balance between speed and accuracy. Though I read quickly due to tight deadlines, I never sacrifice quality.
In addition to my full-time job, I have done freelance editing for a nonprofit that helps people with disabilities find employment. I have edited annual reports, their biannual magazine, fact sheets, postcards, and executive reports. Furthermore, I edit highly technical/scientific papers for academic journals.
I am not an editor who takes a “light touch” to editing; however, at the same time, I am a respectful editor and my goal is never to completely rewrite something – rather, I believe editing should involve collaboration between the writer and editor.
If hired for your project, rest assured that I hold myself to the absolute highest standard and will go over your document with a fine tooth comb to ensure that any and every error is corrected before publishing. You can count on me for a quick, error-free turnaround!
