Rebecca Batalden Editorial
Hello! I am an Ecology Ph.D. turned editor, and I work with academics, graduate students and nonprofits who are seeking to have their written materials make a bigger impact with their intended audience. With my edits, your evidence will be more persuasive, your arguments clearer and your accomplishments more impactful.
- For academics: In the high stakes “publish or perish” environment of academia, you need someone in your corner to ensure your manuscripts are ready for submission, letting you focus on your career goals. Together, we will get your papers published and your grant proposals funded, so that your research contributions can make an impact in your field.
- For graduate students: I give you the gift of time to focus more on your research and less on grammar and formatting. I can verify your dissertation, thesis or paper meets your school’s formatting requirements and your advisor’s specifications. Your evidence will be more clearly conveyed, your text more readable and your claims more persuasive. Together, we’ll ensure your manuscript is ready for your professor and committee’s approval.
- For nonprofit and other organizations: Your reports, white papers and grant applications need to be persuasive and clear to make the biggest impact with your clients and benefactors. In order to connect your mission with funders’ interests and stakeholders’ values, I will help you craft a succinct and compelling narrative. I specialize in nonfiction materials related to K-12 education, science and the environment.
About me: I am a freelance editor based in St. Paul, MN. I received my Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in the Ecology, Evolution and Behavior Department. During graduate school, in addition to publishing in academic journals and books and self-funding my research and stipends through grants, I designed and taught professional development courses for K-12 science teachers, wrote and taught science curriculum for St. Paul Public Schools and published numerous articles in nonprofit newsletters and local newspapers on pressing local environmental issues. These experiences gave me a broad understanding of how to best write for an academic audience and how to communicate complex scientific concepts to a more general audience.
Since receiving my Ph.D., I have continued to work in education and communication. I founded a K-8 charter school, now in its third operational year, focused on building community and raising advocates, while engaging in urban environmental learning. As part of founding a school community, I wrote for and received nearly one million dollars in federal and state grants and donations from foundations and private donors. I used my skills as a writer to communicate persuasively and passionately about the ideas and goals behind this new school and that message resonated deeply with a wide variety of individuals and groups. I will use these skills to help your writing connect with any audience.
I am a skilled communicator with deep background knowledge in ecology, environmental sciences and education. My other passions include gardening, native plants, habitat restoration, urban homesteading, sustainable agriculture and a broad range of other environmental and natural history topics. As a scientist, I was trained to think critically, notice details, ask questions and find answers. I bring these same skills and training to editing. I excel at communicating complex topics and ideas clearly to a general audience, whether those ideas are rooted in science concepts, educational goals or something new that is your passion and focus. I bring those skills now to my work as an editor.
