Mary Grigat
Hello all. My name is Mary Grigat and I am a freelance writer, editor, DEI and sensitivity reader/contractor, authenticity reader/editor, and proofreader. I work well with those for whom English is not their first language and who need a bit of help turning complex ideas into a polished manuscript that reflects the author’s true intentions eloquently and elegantly. I am also an Anthropologist (MA in Anthropology 1997, PhD in Anthropology 2002 – University of Florida). I have published one novel and I have a second novel in postproduction. In addition to my Anthropology credentials I hold a B.A. in English (1990). My interests are wide and varied: I keep abreast of popular culture, current events, scholarly publications and research related to biology, national and global politics, religion, science & technology, business & management, medical anthropology (physical and mental health status among underserved communities is my area of expertise within the discipline of anthropology), gender studies, women’s studies, LGBTQ2+ issues and interests, gerontological studies, art, literature, film, and virtually all things related to the human condition.
I am adept at copyediting, fact-checking and research, line editing, content editing, proofreading, and sensitivity reading. For DEI and sensitivity reading I am up to date on inclusive content guidelines; I am comfortable working with textbooks and other lengthy materials. I have a long history of working with textbook companies and their partners/brokers for large and established houses. I am comfortable with academic and instructional material in all subjects and disciplines. I have also worked with ESL scholars to polish their manuscripts for peer review and publication.
My style of editing and evaluating a manuscript, textbook, article or novel is thorough, intense, lean (where needed), and deadline-driven. I am sensitive to the author’s or publisher’s needs and strive to keep all editorial recommendations and commentary as thoughtful, relevant and non-intrusive as possible. My goal is to make YOU look good.
All writers need fresh eyes on their work to call out typos, gaffs, mechanical errors, content continuity, and formatting issues. I am here to help with that.
Please feel free to contact me via email if you would like to discuss working together on a project.
I am happy to furnish my CV or any other particulars upon contact.
Sincerely,
Mary D. Grigat, PhD
