Blue Octopus Editing LLC

Hi, I’m Lori. I am a developmental editor and writing coach. I provide editorial and emotional support to writers, guiding and nurturing them as they embark on their incredible journey of discovery and fulfillment.

I edit and coach both nonfiction and fiction writers. Fiction genres include fantasy, paranormal, romance, mystery, horror, and new adult fiction. Nonfiction genres include religion and spirituality, self-help, and narrative/creative nonfiction. I serve writers who are willing, ready, and able to invest in themselves and their success.

I offer several services that range from helping you formulate and build a foundation for your book to manuscript evaluations, revisions, and query packages.

How I believe I can help you:

  • I look for your story’s impact on the reader, its logic, what drives and motivates your characters, whether you’ve created a believable world, and if your story meets the requirements of your genre
  • I give you evidence-based feedback, the good and the bad
  • Wherever you are in your process, I will dive in, evaluate, challenge, and coach you to write a story that is polished, professional, and worth reading
  • Whether it’s finishing that novel or short story, figuring out how to start, or just needing help through the revisions, I can help you conquer those challenges
  • I make sure your book is ready for submission to agents, editors, or for self-publishing

Why I believe I can help you:

  • I believe in editing and coaching with integrity. At all times. I try to be honest and truthful as possible about what I am seeing in your work
  • I take my clients and their work seriously and honor their dream and vision
  • I use proven strategies to help writers achieve their goals
  • I have over 30 years experience writing and editing
  • I have gone through an advanced Book Coach Certification Program to be able to call myself a book coach
  • My counseling experience helps me determine what editing and coaching style each writer needs – tough love or a gentler hand

Here’s what some of my clients had to say.

“Lori is a writing Fairy Godmother. If you’re looking for some magic that will bring your book to the next level, she’s your woman. She cares deeply about the success of your work, combing through each sentence with expertise and loving attention to detail. Her character insight added much-needed emotional depth to my novel. In her detailed evaluation, she covered many areas, pinpointing craft blind spots I am sure will pay dividends in my writing practice for years to come. She exceeded my expectations, and I can’t say enough about her professionalism, encouragement, and feedback!”

~Tana Jenkins, Award-winning author, Tedx Speaker, Paranormal & Sweet Romance Writer, Author of the St. James Sisters Collection

“Lori Yares is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met — just what a nervous author might need when bringing their fledgling book in for help. She’s also got a sharp eye for questions that need asking, and a gentle but insistent way of asking a writer to dig deeper.”

~Ken Hughes, Autor of the Shadowed Steps trilogy, Spellkeeper Flight trilogy, and Dragonsigns series ~ Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Thrillers
