Academic Editing
My own academic background is interdisciplinary (with degrees in history and gender studies), and I work with academics in all areas of the humanities and qualitative social sciences. I have a talent for cutting through the noise of a complex text, providing incisive, concrete feedback that helps bring your voice and argument to the fore.
Some recent academic projects include line edits for an archaeology dissertation, developmental edits on a Middle Eastern history monograph, and citation revisions for a gender studies journal article. I’ve worked with scholars at institutions including Iowa State, George Washington University, The University of Connecticut, Portland State, UC San Diego, NYU-Abu Dhabi, and Ball State. I work with all style guides, including Chicago, MLA, APA, and AP.
Non-Fiction Editing
In addition to working on academic monographs, dissertations, and articles, I can provide editorial support on other non-fiction work, and have particular experience working with memoirists. I love helping writers craft memoirs that authentically capture their lived experience while also weaving a compelling narrative for readers.
Writing Coaching
I coach writers at all stages of their journey, offering a safe, jugement-free space to talk through knotty arguments, avoidance and procrastination, and time-management challenges. If you’re in need of more accountability and support for your writing, coaching could be the resource you’re looking for.
My Values
I work with all kinds of clients, but I do have a strong track record working with neurodivergent, disabled, BIPOC, queer, and otherwise marginalized writers. I work hard to stay attuned to the particular challenges that these clients face in their writing lives, and to provide support tailored to those needs. I offer discounts to graduate students and low-income clients.
As someone who has spent years in the weeds of my own research, I understand how significant and freighted writing projects can be, especially in the pressure cooker of academia. Get in touch if you’re interested in working with an editor who will be a true collaborator, who will help push you to better your writing while never losing sight of the personal stakes of your work.
Testimonials
Some kind words from clients:
… She was exceptionally pleasant to work with and fully addressed my complex needs. My anthropological dissertation was greatly improved through her insights, feedback, and edits. Additionally, Kate demonstrated considerable care and thoughtfulness at crafting a plan that would work for us together. (line and developmental editing project for an anthropology dissertation)
… Our bi-monthly [coaching] sessions help me feel accountable and engaged with my project… I’ve most benefited from the opportunity to plan out my writing goals and talking through parts of my argument that feel stuck or under-developed. Working with Kate has truly revolutionized my dissertation writing process! (writing coaching with an English PhD Candidate)
Kate’s insights into my work… [were] far beyond anything I could have expected…[her] changes transformed the work into something that thoroughly tells my story. Kate’s work was on time, communicated professionally and detailed throughout. Everything promised was delivered in an organized and understandable fashion. I highly recommend this brilliant professional. (developmental editing project for a memoir)
