Kaitlin Schmidt

Kaitlin Schmidt Editing and Consulting

If you are searching for an empathetic editor, you have come to the right place. I give precise feedback in a gentle tone. I will not only help you translate your ideas into words more effectively, but also invite you to see the beauty and power of your writing. I find it fascinating to isolate the reasons why words are not working to convey your ideas (yet), and I also deeply enjoy naming the ways your writing is already working. Feedback from me can look like correcting commas one moment and praising an image the next—regardless, I will immerse myself in the world of your work, empower you to write exactly what you intend, and not lose sight of your human need for empathy in the process.

I’m Kaitlin Schmidt (she/her). I was a copy editor at the third biggest newspaper in Washington state, The Spokesman-Review, and then I pursued a teaching career for five years before returning to the editing scene. That means that I not only have experience in editing, but also in demystifying concepts and expertly tailoring my communication to suit individual needs. My students have taught me that no writing mistake lacks a good reason for how it came to be, and that remains true for all ages. The most helpful way forward is nonjudgmental, curious, and specific feedback. I am a warm demander; I won’t let you sell yourself short, but I’ll always communicate with kindness and understanding. Check out the about me page on my website to learn more about my history and qualifications.

Specializations: I offer editing services for authors, professionals, and educators. I specialize in copy editing and proofreading, and I also offer manuscript assessments and line editing. I accept the following types of projects, though I am open to considering others: literary fiction, creative nonfiction, genre fiction (especially LGBTQ+ speculative fiction), persuasive or personal nonfiction, professional writing, and educational writing.

Editing Services: I offer manuscript assessments (big-picture feedback), line editing (paragraph- and sentence-level feedback), copy editing (grammar, spelling, punctuation, usage, style), and proofreading (editing pass on finalized proofs to check for residual errors).

Other information about me: I am neurodivergent and queer, so I’m especially excited to work with marginalized and new authors who could benefit from a coach and cheerleader as well as an editor. If you are a writer, but know next to nothing about the editing process, there is no question too small for me to consider or mistake too silly for me to reassure you about. If you want a sensitive and humble partner who will honor your identity and readily admit to mistakes, you’ve found her. Every service I offer is in support of two causes: midwifing your true voice and honoring your emotional journey as a person. That might look like thoughtful suggestions about your writing, specific positive feedback, a warm and compassionate consultation, or a virtual candle-lighting ceremony to celebrate your success. If you are interested in partnering with me, browse the editing services page to see what services I offer. You can also see a few editing samples here.
