John H Meyer

Cape Fear Publishers

I’m a fast, versatile editor, expert at language but not pedantic, and especially interested in good story-telling, whether fiction or non. I believe an editor best serves a writer by explaining the rationale for changes, ideally with beneficial effects on future work. I enjoy nothing more than helping good writers become better writers, and ensuring their words say exactly what they mean.

I have worked as a writer and editor ever since graduating from Ohio University’s journalism school. I worked in newspapers, in Ohio and North Carolina, reporting on just about every possible topic except sports. My specialties included government, politics, education, criminal justice and public safety, business, the environment, and technology.

After honing my skills as a reporter, I was fortunate to hold the best job in any newsroom, city editor. I worked directly with a talented staff of reporters to plan, shape and polish their work. Then as managing editor of a growing daily paper, I planned news coverage, edited major enterprise reporting projects, supervised state capital and Washington bureau correspondents, and acted as liaison with editors at two dozen other papers in a far-flung group.

Running a newsroom during rapid technical and marketplace changes, I had to master a wide range of software, as well as learning to write and edit formatting code in several programming languages. I’m the guy who translates tech-speak to the news people, and looks out for writers’ and editors’ needs when working with the info-tech folks.

The newspaper industry’s fading fortunes made me jump ship. I have worked as a self-employed “niche” publisher in a local market, doing sales as well as editorial work. So I understand the life of an entrepreneur as well as the corporate world.

Years of experience at getting the paper to press qualified me to do page design, layout, photo editing and placement, headline and caption writing, and all the other chores required to get books and magazines ready for printing. I can call on an experienced graphic-arts pro (my partner) for related needs, including typographical design and book cover design.

My first love, though, is the written word. Conceiving a story, researching and organizing a narrative, spotting and plugging holes, and bringing clarity and grace to rough text are what I’m best at.
