Jenny Bartoy

Welcome!

I specialize in developmental and line editing, along with manuscript critique, beta read, and book coaching, for writers of fiction and creative nonfiction. My favorite genres are literary and speculative fiction, mystery/thriller, and memoir, but I love to diversify so please don’t hesitate to reach out about your project. With a background in marketing and a deep knowledge of the publishing industry, I can also edit your agent query materials and book proposal for maximum impact. My own writing has been widely published and is under literary representation.

My editorial approach is rooted in compassion and honesty. From the big picture to the tiniest detail, I collaborate with you to make your story shine. My mission is to guide you toward the best possible version of your writing while respecting your voice and vision. If you entrust me with your work, in return I want you to feel empowered to take it to the next level, on your terms. Since 2015, I’ve forged lasting partnerships with diverse clients by demonstrating an enthusiastic investment in their success and delivering thorough and thoughtful work.

I also provide editorial management services to individuals on the path to self-publication and to organizations seeking senior expertise. My career includes over fifteen cumulative years of creative project management in publishing, advertising, design, and more. I’m the former managing editor of the online literary magazine Literary Mama and the print quarterly Quiltfolk. I know how to take a book or publication from concept to completion, with a steadfast focus on collaboration and excellence.

My writing appears in The Boston Globe, The Seattle Times, CrimeReads, The Rumpus, Chicago Review of Books, Room, Hippocampus Magazine, and other publications, as well as in anthologies like Sharp Notions: Essays from the Stitching Life (2023). I frequently review books and interview authors; I also write creative nonfiction. My book Broken Free: Writers on Estrangement is represented by Martha Wydysh at Trident Media and will go on submission to publishers in early 2024.

I have a master’s degree in sociocultural anthropology from Columbia University and a certificate in editing from the University of Washington. I grew up in France and returned to the United States as a teenager. I now reside in the Pacific Northwest. When I’m not immersed in words, you can find me practicing yoga, stitching, gardening, or strolling rocky beaches with my family.
