I help fantasy and romance authors who love their novels enough to invest in the editing they need to be successful. I work with self-publishers as well as authors who want to improve their manuscripts before sending them out to agents and publishers. I’d be happy to advise you on navigating the editing process and choosing the right type of editing based on the needs of your novel and your budget.
Editing Services I Offer:
- Developmental editing: I provide big-picture feedback on your novel that discusses character development, plot, and worldbuilding, and that helps you resolve plot holes, inconsistencies, and internal contradictions.
- Manuscript evaluation: This is a small-scale developmental edit that gives more general feedback, takes me less time, and costs you less money.
- Line editing: I help you polish your writing to make your words flow and keep readers engaged. (Some line editing help is included in a developmental edit or a copyedit.)
- Copyediting: I focus on mechanical issues like grammar and punctuation to remove errors and improve the quality of your writing.
- Proofreading: This is a final quality check to catch any stray errors that remain.
If you’re self-publishing, I can also help you with blurbs, author bios, and other promotional materials designed to sell your book to its target readers.
If you plan to get published traditionally, I can also help you craft a query letter and synopsis that will increase your chances of landing the agent or publisher you are querying.
I can help you speak directly to your target audience in order to get them invested early on and keep them engaged throughout the story. I can also help you identify your strengths and pinpoint areas where you have room to grow as a writer. I would love to help you bring your novel closer to the vision you have for it and turn it into something readers will love.
My Education and Training:
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oberlin College where I majored in Latin with minors in History and Ancient Greek.
I have taken courses on everything from proofreading to developmental editing, including specific training in The Chicago Manual of Style, editing for inclusive language, and a course on editing queries, blurbs, and similar materials. Most of my training has had a specific focus on editing fiction.
Genres I Work With:
I have experience working with a variety of genres, including some literary fiction, but I’m primarily a fantasy editor and a romance editor. For fantasy novels I pay special attention to worldbuilding and keep track of each detail to make sure it feels cohesive and believable. I have experience handling multiple points of view in both fantasy and romance novels, an added complexity that often requires extra help to get right.
I have a strong grasp of the tropes and reader expectations for both genres, which enables me to give objective feedback on what readers are looking for and what will help your novel succeed. I regularly spend time on market research, which involves both reading novels in my main genres and looking at data on what’s currently working and what will help you create a novel that readers and publishers can’t wait to get their hands on.
A few examples of sub-genres I particularly enjoy are epic fantasy, high fantasy, dark fantasy, urban fantasy, fantasy romance, paranormal romance, contemporary romance, and fiction with LGBTQ+ characters and themes.
Some of my favorite authors include J.R.R. Tolkien, George R.R. Martin, Frank Herbert, Patrick Rothfuss, Mary Renault, and Madeline Miller.
Let’s work together!
I see editing as a collaborative process between author and editor, and I take care not to edit out your unique style and voice. I may be an expert on editing, but you’re the expert on your book. Send me an email if you’d like to work together to make sure your manuscript reaches its full potential and delights its readers.
