Alyssa "Lys" Sorresso (they/them/Lys)

Hi! I’m Lys. I am a non-binary trans editor, writer, communications consultant, and educator in Chicago, IL with an outstanding eye for detail and nuance. I integrate 15+ years as an arts and social justice educator into my scrupulous and efficient editing and writing expertise. Clients work with me to get clear, culturally and socially responsible communication that remains true to the their voice and perspective.

Over the past 5 years, I’ve edited and written content for the fields of finance, fashion, medicine, and, most recently, sexuality health education, cookbooks, and aviation! Maybe you can tell that I love working with a variety of clients. One of my key strengths is adapting my expertise in storytelling, communication, and project management to fit your needs.

My week consists of managing social platforms, developmental editing, newsletter creation, copyediting, copywriting, image/infographic creation, and teaching. If it has to do with clearly communicating your vision and mission to the greater, globalized world, sign me up. Some of my current and past clients are Thinking Big Financial, Callisto Media, Derrick Schmidt Aviation, and Hillel International.

Speaking of the globalized world, I’ve lived and worked abroad extensively—twice! I’ve seen London, I’ve seen France (specifically, Paris), and as a result, I can effectively navigate the communication demands of different cultures and countries. In London, I worked for Cardboard Citizens and Gendered Intelligence as a facilitator and copywriter. In Paris, I wrote and edited content for fashion and healthcare, and edited book projects, like “No Honey, No Money.

My artistic areas of expertise and interest are creative nonfiction and work that amplifies marginalized voices. I’m a reader for PANK Magazine, a premiere online journal for experimental prose and poetry. My writing is forthcoming or published in Brevity, PANK Magazine, CalyxCreative NonfictionNine Lives: A Life In 10 Minutes Anthology, and elsewhere. My essay “Don’t Borrow Trouble” was listed as “Notable” in The Best American Essays 2015, I was nominated for the 3Arts award in Teaching Artistry in 2016 and awarded a Ragdale Arts residency for the fall of 2018, and my essay “Bubble and Pop” was listed as Notable in Memoir Magazine’s 2019 #MeToo contest.
