Copy Editing and Proofreading

  • I can help with copy editing, line editing, proofing, punctuation & grammar. My goal is to edit in your voice, keep your style and polish your words. 
  • Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) for manuscripts.
  • AP style for news releases and public relations writing.
  • I am familiar with APA and MLA, as I have edited and collaborated on scientific and technical work, including white papers and manuals, but I use them infrequently.

Formatting Print-On-Demand, ebook, and book interior design and coordination

  • Is your manuscript ready? Following these best practices saves you time and money. I have worked on projects that have required extensive time in cleanup that can impact budgets and deadlines.
  • I provide Confidentiality and Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) right from the start so you have complete confidence in sharing your work. I can take a look at your ms for a no-obligation review to get us started. 
  • Do the eBook! It’s best to start with it as the print book can be created from it, sometimes from the completed e-book, lowering labor costs and saving time.
  • I am familiar with IngramSpark, Lulu, KDP, and Draft2Digital (there are others). We can discuss best practices using what’s best and easiest for you to manage. Aggregate sites also save lots of time.
  • If you aren’t comfortable with uploading files, sizing the cover, working with a graphic designer, and managing ISBNs and Metadata, I can do this for you.
  • Images? I can help with those as well, resizing and importing correctly.

  • In a “past life,” I was an award-winning branding and marketing director, copywriter, ghostwriter, and public relations director. Ad copy, advertorials, brochures, P.R., scripts, white papers, technical writing, radio, web content, and blogs. You’ll see references of this work on jamesgangcreative.com. If there are words involved, I’ve probably written in the medium. The ability to write in the author’s voice is my strength.
  • I have worked in consumer and industry sectors, including retail, restaurant, real estate & construction, hospitality & tourism, health & beauty, technology, financial, theatrical, nutraceuticals, and education, including museums and historic sites.

Consultation and assistance

  • ISBNs; Library of Congress requirements; bar codes; descriptions (metadata is very important, and if it doesn’t match, it can cause issues).
  • Assistance in deciding who should publish your work.
  • Assistance in setting up your accounts on Amazon, Lulu, Ingramspark, Draft2Digital, etc. Please note: Authors must set up their accounts, as you will be setting them up for your royalties as well.
  • Assistance with cover art, design, and back cover branding copy.
  • Helping with uploading to publishing and distribution sites.

News Release Writing

  • A standard 400-word news release costs $200 with a phone or Zoom consultation. I coordinate with news distribution services, and you work with them regarding target audiences.

The Nitty-Gritty

  • I schedule projects to devote my utmost attention to detail and do not take multiple projects at the same time.
  • I’ll keep you posted on the project’s progress.
  • The industry standard, as defined by EFA and which I follow, is 250 words per manuscript page. I use EFA’s editorial chart as a guide; I often bundle services to benefit the client’s budget.
