Cara Benson
Cara Benson is a writer and writing mentor. Her stories, essays, and poems have been published in The New York Times, Boston Review, Orion Magazine, Best American Poetry, The Brooklyn Rail, Fence, Hobart, Identity Theory, Poetry Society of America, and many other wonderful venues. Her interviews and reviews at Terrain, Electric Literature, Bookslut, 3:AM, Full Stop, and elsewhere. Her first book, (made), is a hybrid micro prose/poem collection and was published by the Toronto independent publisher Book*hug. She has received a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship and a bpNichol Prize. She wrote a series of posts on walking in the woods for the Best American Poetry website, and her memoir An Armsfull of Birds: A Field Guide to Love, Loss, and Commitment will be published in Spring 2026 with HCI Books. She is represented by Jennifer Thompson of Nordlyset.
Benson brings all of her experience as a writer herself into her work with other writers to help them with their projects. She can help with getting started, inspiration, encouragement, organization, the writing process, rigorous and positive assessment, creating and meeting deadlines, developmental editing, manuscript evaluation, literary coaching, big picture questions and the nitty gritty, among so many other aspects of creating with language and the path to publication. Essays, poems, short stories, reviews, novels, memoirs, creative nonfiction, book length, novella, and short as blog posts – all of these are her loves!
