July 2024

The EFA recently conducted an assessment of its guidelines for Job List postings. Historically, our practice has been to base acceptance of submissions to the Job List on whether the rates offered fell within the ranges reported by EFA members in our rate survey.  (The results of the most recent survey can be found on the 2024 EFA rate chart.)

We are aware, however, that experience levels and business models vary widely among EFA members, and that some charge rates that fall either above or below these reported ranges. In reviewing our guidelines, we came to the conclusion that our practice of relying on the rates reported in the rate survey might be preventing some members from finding jobs via the Job List at pay rates suitable to them.

In addition, members who charge lower rates due to being newer to the editorial field may have found themselves at a disadvantage when applying for work via the Job List. The likely outcome of their comparative lack of experience is that they have been passed over for jobs for which more seasoned editorial professionals were hired.

We have therefore made the decision to revise our guidelines to better serve all EFA members.

More Opportunities

The EFA will now list jobs offering rates that are reasonable but fall below the ranges on the 2024 EFA rate chart. In acknowledgement of the fact that not all members will be interested in all jobs, online postings and Job List alerts will be clearly labeled to show whether the job is or is not consistent with rate chart rates. This will allow members to easily identify the jobs they would like to pursue.

The new Job List system is outlined below.

✅ Rate-Chart Consistent

Jobs labeled “✅ Rate-Chart Consistent” offer pay rates consistent with the rates reported on the 2024 EFA rate chart. This information will be contained in the Job List posting, the email alert subject line, and the body of the alert as follows:

🟡 Non-Rate-Chart Consistent

Jobs labeled “🟡 Non-Rate-Chart Consistent” offer pay rates that fall below the rates reported on the 2024 EFA rate chart. This information will be contained in the Job List posting, the email alert subject line, and the body of the alert as follows:

Client Impact

Under this new system, we will also inform the client as to which category, based on the pay rate they have offered, their job is being placed in. This will help clients who have less experience hiring editorial freelancers better understand the editorial services market and encourage them to consult the rate chart to learn more.

We hope this change will create more opportunities for more EFA members, as well as better serve our clients in their search for freelancers to hire for their projects!

PLEASE NOTE: The EFA Job List is a paid benefit exclusive to EFA members. Job List postings, whether online or distributed by email alert, are for EFA members in good standing only. Please do not copy, forward, or otherwise share any Job List postings. Doing so may result in loss of member benefits. Thank you for helping keep the EFA strong!
