After spending the last two months reviewing, analyzing, and formatting the mountains of data EFA members provided in response to our 2023 rates survey, conducted from November 2023 through mid-January 2024, we are pleased to announce that the 2024 EFA rate chart is now available!

The New and Improved Chart

When viewing the new chart, one of the first things you may notice is that there are many more subcategories for each editorial service than in previous versions. This includes graphic novels, memoirs, various types of academic editing, and so much more.

Another improvement: Because the survey did not use pre-set ranges, the chart displays the actual ranges of per-word and per-hour rates our members provided. The result? A much more accurate representation of EFA members’ rates. The new chart also formats per-word rates in cents (¢) rather than decimal values for easier reading and comprehension.

The Rate Estimator

One of the most significant innovations we’ve made this time around is the creation of an interactive rate estimator. This tool allows users to input a category of editorial service, a type of work, and a word count to obtain a range of estimates for their project. The estimator calculates rates on a per-word and per-hour basis. It also estimates the low-end, median, and high-end total project rates and can even factor in an editorial professional’s years of experience and professional training. We hope this tool will provide clients with a reliable cost estimate and better overall understanding of the range of rates our members charge.

We are very grateful to all our members who participated in the 2023 rates survey and provided us with the accurate, up-to-date information needed to make this project possible. We hope these new tools will benefit EFA members, clients and editorial professionals at large!
