Roberta Newman Consulting Services

I love to help polish writing so that it says what you want it to say.

For over thirty years I’ve provided museums, libraries, publishers, authors, filmmakers, not-for-profit organizations, Ph.D. candidates, and private clients with services that include:

  • Editing journal articles, dissertations, book chapters, exhibition copy, press releases, and other communications.
  • Writing grant proposals, exhibition copy, website copy, audio-tours, picture captions, and archival catalogs.
  • Serving as archival researcher and researching permissions for documentary films, encyclopedias, anthologies, historical monographs, and exhibitions.
  • Translating handwritten Yiddish diaries, letters, Holocaust testimonies, newspaper articles, and other historical documents, and proofreading English transliteration of Yiddish.

An independent scholar and writer based in New York City, I’m the co-author of Dear Mendl, Dear Reyzl: Yiddish Letter Manuals from Russia and America (Indiana University Press, 2014, winner of a National Jewish Book Award). I’m currently working on an anthology of Yiddish poem translations, with the assistance of a 2022-2023 Yiddish Book Center Translation Award.

My projects have included:

  • Successful grant proposals for the Edward Blank YIVO Vilna Online Collections project submitted to the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), European, and private foundations (2013-2019: over $1 million awarded). Editing of NEH grant proposal for documentary film (2020: $320,000 awarded).
  • Copy editing and other editorial services provided to Academic Language Experts (Israel); American Jewish History journal; the Azrieli Foundation (Montreal); and Ph.D. candidates (2020-2022).
  • Writing and editing captions for art and other illustrations for the multi-volume The Posen Library of Jewish Culture and Civilization, Yale University Press (2021-2023).
  • Serving as Illustrations Editor/Director of Archival Research of both the print and online editions of The YIVO Encyclopedia of Jews in Eastern Europe (2008-2010).
  • Researching and negotiating permissions for illustrations for books published by Oxford University Press (2021-2022).
  • Writing audio-tour scripts for exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and The Jewish Museum, including Chagall and the Artists of the Russian Jewish Theater (The Jewish Museum, 2008) and Contemporary Art from the Collection (Museum of Modern Art, 2010).

I’m looking forward to hearing about your project. Please contact me!
