Adam McGee
I am a Harvard-educated editor with a decade of experience helping creative writers, essayists, and academics to craft superb work for general audiences. As Arts and Managing Editor of Boston Review, I’ve worked with many of the greatest writers publishing today, including New York Times best-sellers, MacArthur geniuses, and winners of Pulitzer Prizes, National Book Awards, NAACP Image Awards, the Robert Frost Medal, Hugo and Arthur C. Clarke Awards, and Lambda Awards.
I enjoy every stage of editing: there are as many rewards in shaping a whole project as there are in finding just the right word during the final stage of proofreading. I do have a slight preference for projects I can take from beginning to end, from developmental editing to perfecting the final punctuation mark.
I love working on genre fiction—fantasy (especially urban fantasy), horror, romance/erotica, action/adventure, LGBTQ, YA—as well as literary fiction. I can assist at any stage of writing, including working on agent query letters.
I also edit nonfiction, especially writing that touches on the topics of race/racism, gender and sexuality, history, religion, and politics/public life. I excel at finding ways to present complex academic topics for trade audiences. Work I’ve edited has gone on to be included in the Best American Essays series and award-winning books.
I can provide editorial feedback on poetry and assist with creating manuscripts (both chapbooks and full-length collections).
I hold a PhD in Black Studies from Harvard and a Master of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School. As an academic, I specialized in studying African and Caribbean religions, but am expert at evaluating texts about World Religions broadly, as well as those that deal with race and racism, and have worked as a sensitivity reader around issues of race and religion.
I am also available to provide workshops on how to write for a general audience and how to pitch your work to a magazine.
