Pam Ozaroff

I am an accomplished editor with decades of experience in academic, art, nonprofit, health, and educational publishing.

I do copyediting, line editing, and substantive editing (also known as developmental, content, or structural editing). I have a thorough knowledge of grammar, usage, and style (especially the Chicago Manual of Style but also APA, MLA, AP, and AMA) and am particularly adept at fleshing out, correcting, and styling citations.

I work with a variety of individual and institutional clients:

  • college professors, graduate students, and independent scholars
  • museums and other art organizations
  • art conservators
  • professional organizations and advocacy groups
  • research institutes and foundations
  • nonfiction and fiction writers

I often edit content written by nonnative speakers of English, many of whom are distinguished scholars or researchers. My goal is to make their writing clearer and more idiomatic without altering their ideas. I also work with excellent writers of English whose work benefits from a bit of extra scrutiny and polish—or who need help cutting text to meet length guidelines or to streamline their prose. Many of my clients hire me because they are looking for more in-depth editing or nuanced copyediting than publishers and academic journals typically provide these days.

  • As an academic editor, I edit books and journal articles in a variety of subject areas in the humanities and social sciences, with a focus on history, art history, legal and business history, consumer research, sociology, and gerontology. Clients include professors at Indiana University, University of Georgia School of Law, Harvard Business School, George Washington University, American University’s Kogod School of Business, Dartmouth College’s Tuck School of Business, Boston College’s Carroll School of Management, Georgetown University, Case Western Reserve University, and Mount Saint Mary College.
  • As an art editor, I edit essays, exhibition catalogs, and books for museums and other art institutions. Clients include the Detroit Institute of Arts, Artpace San Antonio (an international artist residency program), the Peabody Essex Museum (through a development house) and Modern Sculpture Conservation. I also worked as a temporary in-house copy editor at the Harvard Art Museums.
  • For organizations and nonprofits, I edit position statements, white papers, research articles, profiles, websites, and other content. Clients include the Women’s Caucus of the American Psychiatric Association, UC San Francisco’s Institute for Global Health Sciences, Stanford University’s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital’s Mood Network website, Boston College’s Lynch School of Education, and Management Sciences for Health.
  • I also edit memoirs, personal essays, op-ed pieces, blog posts, book reviews, and fiction. Clients include a psychologist who wrote a memoir about inherited trauma and group therapy, a psychiatrist who wrote a parenting book based on her clinical practice and her own family experiences, and a fiction writer who self-published a collection of stories.

Recent projects: a book-length academic text on Donald Judd and a journal article chronicling the conservation treatment of a large outdoor painted sculpture by Jean Dubuffet, working directly with a renowned sculpture conservator; chapters in a book on Stalin and the struggle for supremacy over China, working directly with an emeritus history professor at Indiana University; an academic text on ancient Near Eastern wisdom literature, working directly with a biblical studies scholar; a chapter by a professor at the University of Georgia School of Law for a multiauthor book on antimonopoly and American democracy by the Tobin Project, a nonprofit interdisciplinary research organization; a book-length catalog documenting the 25th anniversary of Artpace San Antonio’s renowned artist residency program; journal articles on consumer vulnerability and the commoditization of sex workers in India for a professor at American University and his coauthors at various universities and business schools; a review essay on the history of U.S. antitrust law and policy for professor at Harvard Business School; the 2019 volume of the Bulletin of the Detroit Institute of Arts, a 140-page special issue of the journal devoted to scholarship about Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s painting The Wedding Dance; and white papers on migrant health for UC San Francisco’s Institute for Global Health Sciences.
