Kristy Phillips

As a freelance copyeditor and line editor with 33 years of experience working with publishers, self-publishing authors, and corporations, I’ll work with you to perfect your fiction or nonfiction manuscript with a focus on:

  • Grammar
  • Punctuation
  • Sentence structure
  • Clarity
  • Consistency
  • Vocabulary
  • Flow
  • Style
  • Continuity

I charge a flat fee based on word count. For that fee you get:

  • 2 rounds of editing (redline edits and questions/comments in the review pane)
  • A style sheet (documenting proper nouns, style choices, and Chicago Manual of Style citations)
  • Collaboration after delivery, with review of any new/revised copy that follows the initial edit
  • Final ebook file for Kindle, Nook, Apple, Kobo, Google, and generic EPUB if needed, as well as a PDF for print-on-demand publishing.

I work for the reader as much as I work for the author. While I strive to polish and retain your style and voice, I also make sure that copy is accessible and clear for the reader.

Experience includes:

  • 62 professional exam study guides
  • 72 novels (including 6 children’s/middle grade)
  • 68 nonfiction books
  • 46 memoirs
  • 35 essays
  • 8 short stories
  • Scientific and academic research papers, blogs, white papers, manuals, brochures, and websites

I’ve also ghostwritten 3 books in a crime series.

My education and training include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English literature, University of Washington
  • Professional Certificate in Editing, University of Washington
  • Specialization Certificate in Developmental Editing, University of Washington
  • Five-week memoir-writing workshop through Sarah Lawrence College School of Writing

My clients range from published authors and publishing companies to first-time writers. One book has even taken the author all the way to a Lifetime TV series! Many have been kind enough to give me rave reviews. Here are a few:

“Kristy is the best editor, by far! The competition is far behind. She kept me informed the entire time of the project with updates. The final product she supplied is above-and-beyond what I expected. She made many thoughtful comments and even provided a personalized style sheet to explain her work. There is no doubt that she is an expert at Chicago Style. She is one of these rare people that loves style guides and realizes the importance of rigid structure in order to produce artistic writing. Don’t hesitate to hire Kristy.” — Michael Fridgen, I Sing Grief: A Novel of the Trojan War

“When I first hired Kristy as the editor for my manuscript, I considered it a wonderful stroke of good fortune to find someone so gifted, affordable, and personable. It didn’t take long before I realized our collaboration wasn’t serendipitous at all—it was fate. My words felt safe in her hands, my story came to life, my manuscript made the journey from unpolished draft to published book. I highly recommend Kristy. She is professional, trustworthy and extremely talented. May every aspiring author be so lucky as to have Kristy in their corner.”—Helena Jayne Bryant, Blue Moon, Rare Fire

“If you’re looking for a skilled, talented and responsive editor, look no further! I was blown away at what an outstanding job Kristy did on editing my manuscript! She caught all of the little (and big) things that I missed. She was extremely communicative with me throughout the process, and she was always respectful when recommending changes. She treated my manuscript as if it were her own, and I could tell that she cared about my project. I will absolutely use her again in the future, and I highly recommend her to all! She will be my go-to editor on all future projects. She is simply THE BEST!”Stacy Sato, The Missing Link

I work from my home office in Mill Creek, Washington, with corgis sleeping under my desk.
