Tips and Tools: Members Sharing Best Practices

Thursday, February 16, 2017

LOCATION: The Catalina Construction Zone (a.k.a. Wynne and Dave's house) 1619 N Catalina Avenue Tucson AZ 85712

Share tips and strategies you use to land clients or to accomplish the editing, formatting, and writing tasks you tackle on a regular basis. We have much to learn from one another.

Breaking into Digital Publishing: Adding to Your Editorial Repertoire

Thursday, January 19, 2017

LOCATION

The Catalina Construction Zone (a.k.a. Wynne and Dave's house) 1619 N Catalina Avenue Tucson AZ 85712

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION

This presentation introduces editors to software that makes designing and creating digital books (epubs for a variety of readers and Kindles) ridiculously easy. Jutoh (www.jutoh.com), from Anthemion Software, is inexpensive and easy to use. Import a well-formatted Word document and in a few minutes you can compile the digital formats of your choice--no need to learn to write HTML or CSS (cascading style sheets). Editors will see a file go from an unformatted Word document to digital files that pass epub validation and are ready to upload to Amazon (Kindle), Barnes and Noble (Nook), Kobo, iTunes, and other digital publishers in almost no time at all.

Thursday, November 17, 2016

NEW LOCATION: El Charro, 311 N. Court Ave., Tucson, Arizona

Please note the new meeting day (Thursday) and earlier-than-usual time (5:00).

=======================

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION Grant writing: who knew it was a profession? As a vital part of nonprofit fundraising, grant writing calls on a variety of skill sets beyond writing persuasive copy. Funders need to be discovered, explored, researched, courted, and presented with a proposal that meticulously complies with all of their requirements. Learn why writing for a specific audience or reader may never be more challenging than writing for a particular grant-funding source.

ABOUT DAVE Dave Sewell is a freelance writer and editor, specializing in business proposals, grant applications, newsletters, articles, manuals, and other forms of business communications. His background includes nonprofit management, health care, the automotive inspection and maintenance industry, and the performing arts. Dave has been a member of the Arizona chapter of the EFA for nearly five years and currently serves as secretary of the Southern Arizona chapter of the Grant Professionals Association (GPA). Dave has written for Tucson Lifestyle Magazine, and he currently serves as president of Old Pueblo Playwrights.

Microsoft Word Add-Ins for Editors

Tuesday, September 17, 2013

An editor's work often involves repetitive processes, constant double checking, and confirming that all changes are consistently applied. PerfectIt Pro and Recipes for Word offer a variety of tools to help an editor do the heavy lifting and get the work done more quickly.

This month's speaker is EFA member Sharon Miller. Sharon is a Tucson-based freelance writer and editor with extensive experience in the field of education, although her writing is not limited to that field.

As an online writer, she maintains two blogs and manages the content and design of five websites. She has published in a variety of printed contexts, including coauthoring a chapter, "Effective Writing for Teacher Researchers," in Teachers Taking Action: A Comprehensive Guide to Teacher Research, (2008) and a book, Doing Academic Writing in Education: Connecting the Personal and the Professional, (2005).

She provides a wide range of writing and editing services, including proofreading, copy editing, substantive editing, preparing documents for print-on-demand and ebook publication, ghostwriting, and one-on-one consultation with writers to realize their publication goals. Most recently, she has created the ebook version of How Do We Love? by Danielle Landis, which is on sale at Amazon and other online outlets. The print version of the book is set to go to print through BookBaby within days. There are over 200 images and photos in both the e- and print books, which was a huge challenge, and which was met successfully.

Other current projects are a series of Kindle short stories about a dog rescue in Northern British Columbia, Canada, a series of memoir stories by a woman raised in the islands of the South Pacific, and a non-fiction book called Five Steps to Becoming Your Own Patient Advocate, by a close friend whose medical journey is nothing short of a miracle.

Editing Scripts: A Collaborative Process

Tuesday, July 16, 2013

Theatre is a collaborative art form, and writing for the Theatre involves a unique set of challenges and opportunities for the playwright. While a script may stand on its own as literature, its primary function more closely resembles a musical score than a novel or short story. The play not only tells a story, but also provides a roadmap for creative choices made by other artists. These artists, under the guidance of the director, apply their interpretive skills and vision toward the transformation of the written story into a three-dimensional living reality.

As the writer, the playwright retains primary control of his or her creative content, but the script's final form--the version that is eventually published--is subject to the influence of three principal players: the director, the stage manager, and the dramaturg, a mysterious (some might say sinister) presence who somehow exerts influence in a subtle but generally beneficial way.

EFA member Dave Sewell will provide a glimpse into the collaborative process of play development. Dave has 40 years of experience as a director, actor, designer, arts manager, and most recently, playwright. Dave has a degree in Theatre from the University of California, Riverside, and is currently a member of Old Pueblo Playwrights (OPP) here in Tucson. He is the sole proprietor of The Tucson Wordsmith, specializing in writing and editing grants, proposals, newsletters, and other documentation for public and private sector organizations, including performing arts, medical foundations, and the automotive inspection and maintenance industry.

Joining Dave will be a special guest: author, playwright, and journalist John Vornholt. John is the author of 65 published novels and nonfiction books, 4 published plays, and hundreds of magazine and newspaper articles, including the Hollywood Reporter and The Tucson Weekly. John's young adult fantasy novel, Cupidity (written under the name Caroline Goode), has been optioned for TV and movies by the Jim Henson Company. His adult fantasy novel, The Fabulist, has been turned into a musical for the stage, winning several awards, including the Richard Rodgers New Musical Award. His Troll King series has been launched in the United Kingdom, and has been translated into several foreign editions. John's 30-plus Star Trek novels have been enjoyed by Trekkies the world over.

Planning for 2013

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

In September 2008, our chapter's founding members met and discussed the kind of content we'd like to have at meetings, how often we should meet, and what community activities to participate in. In the four years since, the chapter's membership has grown and evolved, and we've gained a lot of experience through trial and error. This month, we'll circle up the wagons once again and take a look at the big picture for 2013. We'll assess which meeting topics have been most useful, which types of events have led to the most jobs, and any new outreach we'd like to take on. We'll discuss ways for members to develop more leadership within the chapter and address basic questions such as how often we'd like to meet.

EFA members and interested nonmembers are welcome. Members who cannot attend in person are welcome to Skype in. Light refreshments will be served.

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

Speed-Networking Night is a members-only event. It will not be held at our usual location. If you have questions about the event, please contact the chapter coordinator at the above e-mail address. Several communications went out about this event in advance, so if you are a member in Arizona and you did not hear about it, please check that you have enabled Constant Contact messages through EFA HQ (including job list postings; these are lumped together, so if you thought you unsubscribed from the Job List you probably unsubscribed from your ability to receive announcements from EFA as well) and that you are set up to receive email at your current address through our chapter's members-only Yahoo Group.

Final Planning Meeting for Speed-Networking Night

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

EFA members are invited to join us this coming Tuesday as we finalize the game plan for our speed-networking event, to be held Tuesday, Sept. 18, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.(location TBA).

Speed-Networking Night will be an opportunity for members to get to know potential clients whom we met at the Tucson Festival of Books, plus a few other employers who are receiving special invitations. Through a series of short conversations, you'll find out more about the projects these writers and publishers are working on, share a bit about your expertise, and make plans to reconnect if it's a match. At the end of the night, the winner of our raffle will receive one hour of free consultation or equivalent services with the editorial specialist of her or his choice, so every participating member needs to be willing to offer that if the winner chooses her/him. In the meantime, all participants will have the chance to make connections with clients looking for a freelancer with their skills and experience.

If you are an EFA member interested in participating, please join us for this final planning meeting. If you can't make it this Tuesday but you'd like to come on Sept. 18, please RSVP to chap_arizona@the-efa.org.

Light refreshments will be served at our planning meeting. If you're attending, please update your EFA directory listing, and, if you'd like to use a different bio for Speed-Networking Night, please draft that and bring a copy to share.

Planning Meeting for EFA Member-Client Speed Dating Event

Monday, May 14, 2012

At the Tucson Festival of Books, potential clients who stopped by our booth had the opportunity to enter a drawing to win a free hour of consultation with an editorial specialist of her choice. We plan to have the drawing at the end of a speed-dating-style event with potential clients and participating EFA members. This month, we'll plan out the details of the event, taking into account member availability and the responses we got from potential clients about what time frame would work best for them.

The actual speed-dating event will be for dues-paying EFA members only, but the planning meeting is open to members and guests of the EFA. Only members can vote, but everyone present can contribute to the discussion. Light refreshments will be provided.

The Mercenary Writer's Guide to Setting Fees: How to Bid a Project in Five Minutes or Less

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

This will be a working meeting, so come prepared with a notebook and pen and/or laptop computer, a calculator, a list of all business expenses, and dreams of financial prosperity. We will create reference charts that allow us to completely stop those agonizing hours of calculating project bids. We will address pragmatic concerns involved in truly supporting ourselves as editorial specialists in the freelance market.

Speaker: Heather Severson, Mercenary Writer & Gypsy Scholar Heather Severson has been a freelance writer since she graduated from college in 1992. She had business cards printed and thought that was a great start to a freelance career. Nearly two decades, a master's degree, and any imaginable combination of full- and part-time jobs went by before she realized that she was, at last, a Real Freelance Writer. She learned as many lessons as Pinocchio and the Velveteen Rabbit on the way to that epiphany. She is happy to share this wealth of knowledge with new writers. Her first tip: never meet clients in your bathrobe. Heather is the owner StudioGraphia, LLC, a freelance writers' cooperative that provides services in writing, editing, instruction, research, and design. In 2010, she managed a team of twenty-five writers for a project that brought in nearly six figures. She enjoys collecting style manuals and funky job titles for her freelance associates, such as Word Wizard, Literary Soldier of Fortune, and Document Diva. For more information, see http://studiographia.net.
